ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS

Botulinum Toxin A (BTX) comes under many brand names such as Botox, Azzalure and Bocouture.  It is a prescription only medicine (POM), which means only a prescriber, e.g doctors/dentists are legally allowed to prescribe it.

It works by “relaxing the muscle” thus causing less movement. Less movement = less lines/ wrinkles.

Don’t worry it is not the 90s anymore.  We don’t do frozen.

A full medical consultation must be had prior to treatment.

Overactive eyebrowns, down turned mouth lines, bunny nose lines and excess sweating can also be treated.

Cosmetic uses

Wrinkles or rhytides as they are medically known are caused by use of our facial muscles.  As we grow older our skin composition changes, it becomes less elastic and less hydrated; our facial expressions can become etched in.  This can leave some people looking sad or angry even when they aren’t!

There are two types of wrinkle – static and dynamic.

Static – when your face is at rest and you have prominent lines.

Dynamic – when you get lines as you express yourself.

BTX is used to treat dynamic lines because it relaxes muscle activity. It has reduced effect in static lines, but it can soften them and stop them getting worse.  Static lines can be treated with a combination of BTX and dermal filler.

Don’t worry, we have progressed since the 90’s where frozen was in fashion.  Frozen is most definitely out.

Therapeutic uses

Hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) can be embarrassing.  It doesn’t have to be.

BTX can be placed with tiny injections administered under the arm – usually painless.  Results can be lasting.

Don’t worry just because you are not sweating less under your arms, it doesn’t mean that you will sweat more anywhere else.  The signals to sweat at the underarms are still released by the brain, but the last stage is stopped.  This is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved.

Bruxism/ Grinding

You may be aware you do this, as when you wake up you may find your jaw muscles sore or you may have a headache.

BTX can be injected into the masseter muscle (lower jaw) to relax this.  It is reviewed after a month in case further treatment is needed, and then again at 9-12 months.

A side effect of this is that it slims your jawline – a lot of people who have bruxism or grind may see that their jaw has enlarged over time due to over usage of the masseter muscle.
